Creating a Cozy Colonoscopy

It’s the sentence most people dread when visiting their doctor, “I think it’s time to get a colonoscopy.”

Though imaginations run wild concerning details of the prep and procedure, it’s unanimous that getting a colonoscopy isn’t a fun experience. Since I recently delved into the world of Hygge, I was determined to minimize the unpleasantness by creating a cozy colonoscopy.

Camping Out

First task, choose a comfortable place to camp out. I chose my bedroom. Bed is a nice place to cuddle up on while waiting for things get started, and a restful place to take breaks between bathroom visits. My bedroom also has it’s own bathroom a few steps away from the bed, a bonus in the later stages of the prep.

Setting the Mood

A few months before the coloscopy, I cleared the tv we never watch out of our bedroom. With the new, empty space, I created a Hygge dresser.

Before drinking the first bottle of prep, I lit some candles and turned on the twinkle lights to set a cozy atmosphere.

Snuggly Additions

Having a few things that give you a warm fuzzy feeling, helps make the prep friendlier. I grabbed my favorite knit blanket, changed into pajamas, and zipped up my lovingly worn, sweater hoodie.

The cats also thought this was an event to be a part of, so I had two, unexpected, adorable furballs, by my side.

Entertainment

After watching, “To Walk Invisible,”  a PBS mini-series about the Bronte sisters, I realized I was a Bronte sister short. I purchased a copy of, “Agnes Grey,” by Anne Bronte, for my prep night.

Having something portable to bring into the bathroom worked well. I love a good book involving governesses, courting, parsons, and walks on the moors. Watching something on an ipad, or playing games on your phone, would also be a portable, welcome distraction.

Organization

The prep I chose involved drinking two bottles of solution, then a prescribed amount of water. Since I knew there was a good chance I’d lose track of the water consumption, I made a handy-dandy check-off.

Organization took the stress out of remembering to do everything perfectly, and gave me more time to bask in British literature goodness.

In the end (pun slightly intended) it wasn’t such a terrible experience. During the procedure you get a fantastic nap, thanks to the “spicy” meds (the anesthesiologist’s description). If you are nice, you get all the cookies when it’s done (I may take part in research studies just for the Lorna Doones)

It’s no sitting on a beach in the Bahamas, but worth every ounce of temporary discomfort for peace of mind.  So grab a good book, a snuggly blanket, and click on those twinkly lights, and make your colonoscopy cozy.
