I find that with travel, spontaneity often leads to fearlessness.

It’s our final breakfast at Judy’s Touch of Class B&B in Anchorage, Alaska. Our mornings of smooth, strong coffee, homemade French Toast, and my favorite, reindeer sausage, has come to an end.

“What time is your flight?” Jim asks. We explain that our flight isn’t until this evening.

“Do you have any plans? It’s a perfect day to fly.”

When we first check into Judy’s Touch of Class B&B, we spot the unique amenity on the B&B’s information sheet. Jim is a pilot, with his own plane. If time and weather permit, Jim can take you for a scenic flight.

Though it seems like a great opportunity, our schedule while in Anchorage is packed. We didn’t  think we could squeeze in a flight, but here we are, with time to kill, and an offer we could not refuse.

If I had time to think, I’d be nervous. I’ve never been on a small plane before. But as we quickly finish packing our bags, my excitement takes over

We’re doing this. Now. There’s no time to overthink. There’s no room for jitters. One last adventure.

Shannon takes the co-pilot seat, while I settle into the back.

Jim is a meticulous pilot. I’m fascinated as he goes through the pre-flight checklist.

Usually, Jim takes guests for a fly over of Knik Glacier, but as we already did that during our glacier walk, and since the weather was so cooperative, he offers to fly a route that would give us a view of other glaciers.

Taking off and landing are my least favorite parts of flying. I expect the take off in a smaller plane to be bumpier. I am shocked when we gracefully lift into the air with barely a tremble.

The busy streets of the city fade to the wilds of nature.

The mountains are close. Very close. I feel like I could reach out my arm and touch them.

For a brief moment, I wonder if I should be alarmed, but the fear is banished by pure wonder.

Lakes, rivers, and glaciers, astound our eyes.

Jim gives us a full tour, explanations and stories included.

I enjoy listening to the chatter among the pilots. Everyone is astounded by the fabulous flying weather.

Our landing is just as flawless as our take off.

After Shannon helps Jim push the plane back into the hanger, we head back to the B&B to part ways with Jim and Judy.

We’re grateful for their hospitality during our stay in Anchorage. Their cozy suburban home felt less like staying at a traditional accommodation and more like staying with family friends (also…9pm ice cream time).

Flying with Jim will always be one of our favorite accommodation amenities. It was the perfect experience to end our Alaskan adventure.

*Jim is not a commercial pilot, so he doesn’t charge for flights. We did give him a donation to cover the cost of fuel for the flight, plus a bit more for going out of his way to squeeze us in.

The best memory I have of our Alaskan trip a few years ago was flying above glaciers in a small plane. It was magical. Our flight was from Haines and we flew over Glacier National Park where we could see glaciers calve.

The plane flight sounds fantastic. What a great opportunity. I wish I had stayed at this B&B when I was in Anchorage.
