A little league team sits across from us at the Richmond Flying Squirrels Ballpark. Matching hats. Gloves at the ready. They try several times to start the wave. I don’t love doing the wave, but I’m not about to disappoint a group of ten-year-olds. A young girl’s face coated in blue cotton candy pops up on the mega
screen. The crowd honors military veterans. The ground crew, donned in squirrel costumes, perform a choreographed dance. The atmosphere is friendly and fun. As I take a bite of my Squirrely Fry, I vow to attend more Minor League Baseball games.
Getting There/Parking/Leaving
The bus transportation in Richmond is free. It is free to residents. It is free to visitors. On the website or app, plug in your current location and where you need to go, and the directions appear. With free transportation, walkable areas, and plenty of free or low cost activities, Richmond is a great, affordable destination. From our hotel, we boarded one bus, transferred to a second, and got dropped off at the ballpark parking lot. It was easy. We did have to walk across the whole parking lot and past the old ballpark to get to the new Carmax Park. Other people on the bus exited one stop before us and had a shorter walk.
From our observations, there were plenty of spots to park in the parking lot, and traffic getting to the park wasn’t crazy. The traffic leaving the park was a normal post-event level of chaos. Walking loops around the ballpark, doing the wave multiple times, and cheering for the team left us tuckered out. Instead of taking the bus back, we used a rideshare.
The Stamp
Yes. Minor League Baseball Parks also have Ballpark Passport Stamps. There is a separate book you can purchase that features all of the Minor League Parks. We used the back of our MLB book for our Richmond Flying Squirrels stamp.

The Stadium
The Richmond Flying Squirrels Ballpark, Carmax Park, opened in 2026. It is bright, modern, and open. Wherever you are, you have a view of the field. Unlike large MLB ballparks, minor league parks have a smaller, intimate feel. The ballpark has a nice variety of seating options. You can choose standing room tickets, fancy Adirondack chairs, general ballpark seats, or a suite. The terraced lawn area is an ideal option for little ones brimming with energy and not interested in sitting in a seat for an entire game. The playground area is also a good option for kids with extra energy to burn. No matter what you choose, there is not a bad seat
in the house.
Some serious sports fans hate attending Minor League Baseball games. This is due to the between-inning antics. The antics at the Flying Squirrels game were non-stop. A kid smashed a pie into his dad’s face. The Mixed Nuts mascots raced.
They shot hot dogs and T-shirts into the crowd. I loved every minute. Smiling faces abounded. No one was bored at the Flying Squirrels game. You do you. If you are intense about the sport, you may find all of the silliness annoying. Though I appreciated the history of Yankee Stadium, I admit I found the lack of Mascots and antics dull.

The Richmond Squirrels make sure you are having a good time from the minute the gates open until they close.
The staff at the Richmond Flying Squirrels Ballpark were helpful and friendly. They appeared genuinely enthusiastic that you chose to attend the game.
The Richmond fans are wonderful. When the team was down, they expressed encouraging cheers. When the team started to win, they cheered louder. When a player hit a home run, fans jumped to their feet. Strangers high fived us. When the team won, the place exploded with joy.
It is the bonus of Minor League Baseball. No one is angry, too drunk, or negatively fervent about a play. The atmosphere is low on tension and high in delight.
The Food
Squirrely Fries is the food to get at Carmax Park. High points for marketing. Squirrely Fries are curly fries. No, it’s not some super imaginative ballpark food. A tried-and-true snack is often the best snack. The Squirrely Fries were tasty. I was afraid they would be soggy and bland, but they were perfectly crispy
and well-spiced. Don’t skip the Squirrely Fries. They are a must.
As pickle and hot dog connoisseurs, it only made sense to try them together. At the Richmond Flying Squirrels Ballpark, you can find The Big Dill Pickle Dog. It is a hot dog that uses a pickle as a bun instead of bread. In theory, it sounded like a neat idea. In truth, pickles don’t make the best holders. The hot dog kept trying to escape its slippery vinegar-dill infused confines. Fearing I would get mustard all over my new Flying Squirrels t-shirt, I gave up and ate each element separately.
If you want to avoid carbs/gluten, The Big Dill Pickle Dog is a great choice. In the end, we thought the regular jumbo dog was the yummier pick.
Ice Cream in a Helmet
After walking a full loop around the ballpark, we stopped at the Dippin’ Dots stand for ice cream in a helmet. The helpful thing about Dippin’ Dots is that it takes longer for your frozen treat to melt into a soupy mess.
I’m never mad at Dippin’ Dots.
Celebration
For the home run and overall win, the stadium lights blinked on and off. A win sign flashed on the mega screen. Mascots Nutzy and Nutasha ran out onto the field.
Conclusion
Whether visiting a destination or in your backyard, if you haven’t been to a Minor League Game or haven’t been to a game in a while, grab some tickets. Ballpark guests included families with kids, little league teams, groups of friends, and
baseball/ballpark enthusiasts. Our night at the Richmond Flying Squirrels Ballpark was filled with laughter, good baseball, and solid snacks. It’s an excellent and affordable activity for individuals of all ages.
