It’s no secret that my favorite food is ice cream, but what about the other member of Obligatory Traveler? He has a great fondness for pretzels. So while visiting the Turkey Hill Ice Cream Experience is on my Pennsylvania, bucket list, visiting The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, for the Sturgis Pretzel Tour, is Shannon’s top request.
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Tour, is located in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Lititz is beautiful. It has a cozy, small town feel, and is worth visiting, whether or not you crave pretzels.
Purchase your tour tickets, online, ahead of time. They keep the groups to a manageable size, and tours sell out. Tours occur between 12pm-4pm, are an affordable price, and last approximately 25 minutes.
We first stop at the store’s register, to sign-in for our tour. Applause to Sturgis Pretzel Tour for issuing a tangible ticket. It makes a nice keepsake.
Our group is greeted by tour guide Sam. Sam is knowledgeable, animated, and tells jokes. All the best qualities for a food related tour guide.
The first order of business, the reason why most people take The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Tour, is learning the art of pretzel twisting. I’m nervous. I don’t want to look like a pretzel-twisting-hot-mess.
The pretzel-twisting set up is well organized. Each visitor occupies their own twisting station. Sam is a master at explaining pretzel twisting.
She explains each step, in precise detail. In the end, everyone in the group (including me), constructs an excellent looking pretzel.
Sam examines our work. We are awarded “Official Pretzel Twister” Certificates (note-you do not get to keep the dough/uncooked pretzel).
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, is the oldest pretzel bakery in America. Our pretzel tour continues, with Sam demonstrating the original pretzel baking process.
Before departure, we are gifted small bags of snack-sized, hard pretzels.
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Tour, like most tours, exits through the gift shop. The gift shop is filled with pretzels galore. Including destination specific shapes.
When we checked-in for the tour, the hot, freshly baked, soft pretzels, called our name. We couldn’t leave without giving one a taste.
It’s pillowy-soft, with the slightest chew, and a distinctively baked flavor. Even if you don’t take the tour, though you should, stop by the shop for a fresh pretzel.
If you are visiting the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area, book a Sturgis Pretzel Tour at The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. Learn about old-fashioned pretzel baking, and most importantly, earn your “Official Pretzel Twister” Certificate. It’s a fun, foodie activity.
