Williamsburg, Virginia, has an unending quest to teach visitors history. I remember being extra excited at Mount Rushmore, because I got to taste vanilla ice cream made from the original recipe Thomas Jefferson brought back from Europe. With this ice cream history knowledge, I should have known there wouldn’t be any old-timey inspired Williamsburg Ice Cream. Ice cream wasn’t introduced until the late 1700s. I guess I hoped that one of the brave, industrious, Jamestown brides, would have snuck in some frozen treat knowledge. So, even though I didn’t get any, I don’t know, peanut soup flavored ice cream, I still enjoyed exploring Williamsburg’s ice cream scene.
SABOR MICHOACANO ICE CREAM
A last minute, Williamsburg Ice Cream, addition before our departure. Sabor Michoacano Ice Cream, did not disappoint. It’s a bit tricky to find at first. We drove back and forth on Capitol Landing Rd. before I noticed several picnic tables sitting on the side of a store at an Exxon gas station. Figuring the picnic tables had a purpose, we pulled in and discovered we found the ice cream spot.
Joy abounded as an array of flavors, not found at other United States shops, stretched out before us. I try not to be an over sampler at ice cream establishments. My rule is 3 samples, but at Sabor, I broke the rule and tried 5. The samples didn’t make choosing easier.
Horchata, passion fruit, soursop, were all contenders. In the end, we went with the pine nut ice cream. The taste was sweet and light, and we weren’t sure we would ever stumble upon pine nut ice cream again. Though a little ice crystaly, the flavor was tasty.
If you’re in Williamsburg, and need a break from the more traditional chocolate, caramel, fudge, inspired ice cream flavors, keep your eyes open for the Exxon station and give Sabor Michoacano a try.
KILWINS
After hours of chatting with wigmakers, book binders, and old-timey political experts, a young (or not so young) girl’s fancy turns to some Williamsburg Ice cream. Fortunately, Kilwins is only a short walk away from the tourist attraction that is Colonial Williamsburg.
The candy and ice cream shop’s charm, will whisk you away to times when the world was a more innocent place to abide. I got the Mackinac Island Fudge (Vanilla with swirled chocolate fudge) and Shannon got the Sea-Salt Caramel (Vanilla with swirls of salted caramel and chocolate-covered caramel candy).
When we are at home, and get an immediate ice cream craving, there are a few close-to-our-house places we go. The ice cream is good, it satisfies the craving, it’s serviceable. That was our feeling at Kilwins.
THE MEADOWS ORIGINAL FROZEN CUSTARD
While visiting the Williamsburg Ice Cream offerings, we observe that frozen custard dominates. Though frozen custard and soft serve aren’t our favorite versions of frozen treats, when in Rome. The Meadows came recommended, so we stop in.
The neatest part about The Meadows is that they change their flavors everyday. You can check Facebook or Instagram to see the day’s posted flavors.
Watching the custard gently flow from the machine, is a great way to obtain a moment of Zen.
On the menu the day of our visit, Strawberry Oreo and S’mores. In the interest of research, we tried both flavors.
Unlike other cookie embellished frozen treats, where the cookies tend to be soggy/mushy, the Oreos in The Meadows frozen custard, retained their crunch.
I savored the cookies, but wished the strawberry flavor popped more. The custard mostly tasted like milk with a hint of strawberry. I assume this wasn’t The Meadows fault, but more a product of being custard. The chocolate custard, which was the base for the s’mores flavor, definitely had a stronger chocolate taste.
I wish we had the time to try some of the other custard places in the area for comparison. I imagine The Meadows is one of the best, but I can’t say that it swayed us towards being custard lovers.
THE BIG SCOOP
Did I do the cliché writing thing and save the best Williamsburg Ice Cream for last? Yes, yes I did.
A shout out to Jim and Martha, fellow ice cream enthusiasts, who recommended, met up with us, and treated us to The Big Scoop. What’s better than ice cream? Ice cream someone treats you to.
In addition to the friendly staff, The Big Scoop won me over by having multiple flavors that included peanut butter. I sampled some of the non-peanut butter flavors, asking myself, do I really need all the peanut butter? But as it turns out, I indeed required all of the peanut butter.
The Big Scoop’s ice cream was sumptuously creamy. The flavors were balanced well. None of the additions, like the puppy chow pieces, overpowered the smooth, delicious, ice cream.
If you only able to visit one Williamsburg Ice Cream shop, make it The Big Scoop.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Although I didn’t find any Jumble Cookie or Pepper Cake flavored ice cream, our Williamsburg Ice Cream adventure was enjoyable. Whether plummeting with fright on a roller coaster, or chatting with a colonial wigmaker, I encourage you to take at least one Williamsburg touristy break for a delicious frozen treat.
