Remember when Steampunk was all the rage?
Books, graphic novels, gear decor, songs about airship pirates, and the cosplay, oh the cosplay!
It was everything my Victorian loving tween/teen self and my science fiction adult self dreamed.
Sadly, the trend fizzled out. The balls and events stopped. Our local store selling Steampunk accouterments closed.
It was sad times, so when I heard that Universal Orlando was opening a Steampunk themed restaurant, I wanted to jump in a Gurney Carriage and make haste to Orlando.
It took longer than I thought to get there, but I finally visited Toothsome at Universal City Walk, Orlando.
Excitement doesn’t begin to describe what I feel as I spot Toothsome Chocolate Emporium from a distance.
Instead of waiting for a table, we opt to sit in the bar area.
My heart does cartwheels as we traverse the interior. Maps, gears, bowler hats, and scientific equipment, dance in my eyes.
Pre-trip, I heard the appetizers at Toothsome were better than the entrees. I thought it would be easy to pick a few appetizers to share, but after seeing all of the tasty offers, and watching a few pass our table, we languish over our cravings.
The drinks menu sparks glee. Being Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, most of the cocktails have a chocolate element.
The Macadamia Chocolate Cherry, is nutty, rich, with a splash of tartness. It’s the perfect drink to take in slow, deliberate, sips.
Packing carry-on only, I couldn’t bring my full Steampunk attire, but I manage to don my goggles and gloves.
The staff and servers appear to enjoy my enthusiasm.
Shannon tries a Chocolate Stout that you can only get at Toothsome. I’m not much of a Stout girl, but maybe I haven’t had a really good one, because the Toothsome Stout is delicious.
Since the Warm Chocolate Almond Bread, is a signature appetizer, we order it, along with the Totchos, and the Coffee and Chocolate Stout Chicken Wings.
I’m a little late to the game, but I’d just like to officially thank the inventor of Totchos, and thank Toothsome for elevating them using, andouille sausage, pork belly, and cheese sauce.
The wings and bread are equally yummy, and although we ponder another round of wings, or a taste of a different appetizer, our stomachs need room for what most people come to Toothsome for, over the top milkshakes.
Since the shakes are more outrageous than Jem, we choose to share the Espresso Buzzzz. It’s almost too fancy to sip.
Almost…
My Toothsome visit highlight, is meeting Penelope and Jacques.
Penelope is a badass inventor, with a marvelous hat. Jacques is one of her creations. Jacques is rather fond of cocktails. I wondered if Penelope is a mind reader because she chats with me about the inventions she is working on to make eating ice cream easier. A lady after my own ice cream heart. The two spend a decent amount of time interacting.
Not sure if it is the meet and greet, or the coffee ice cream mixed with espresso flowing through my body, but I’m buzzing with elation.
If I lived in Orlando, I would spend a lot of time hanging out at Toothsome, immersing in the Steampunk fantasy. Toothsome was cooler and more fun than I even imagined. I’m so glad that Universal Orlando took a trend/genre that fizzled, and made it is sizzle once again.

atIsn’t it awesome to revisit your younger self?
And eat and drink well at the same time!
For me, it’s Paris. It makes me feel 18 again…
