There are trips where an accommodation is just a place to shower and rest your head. Then there are trips where the accommodation is an important part of the experience.
I mentioned in the previous post, that when I saw pictures of The Old Gin House, it was love at first sight. The brick and wood spoke to me. It oozed character. I knew we had to stay there.
A quick note. The Old Gin House was once a cotton gin. No relation to the alcohol.
Location
The Old Gin House is located on the lower part of the island of St. Eustatius. The location offers inspiring water views.
Sitting on our balcony, listening to the water, watching the sunset, melts the day to day stress away.
One of the main reasons people visit St. Eustatius, is scuba diving. We don’t dive, but if we did, The Old Gin House is only steps away from one of the dive centers. We chat with other visitors during our stay who give a resounding thumbs to the diving.
The majority of activities on the island, are on the upper part of the island. The island is small, and walkable, so we don’t rent a car. To get from the lower island to the upper island, we walk a very steep path.
The path is good exercise, and offers impressive views, but steep is the nemesis to my pulmonary hypertension. By the second day, I know the two spots I have to stop at to catch my breath.
Room
When booking our room, we book what is available. We are surprised and overwhelmed with joy, when we discover we booked a large, gorgeous, suite.
There is a huge bedroom, with a large comfy bed.
A living room area with homey furniture.
We appreciate this during the hottest, sunniest, parts of the day. It’s the perfect space for a rest in the air conditioning. There is reading, playing on our phones, and naps.
Our room also has an office space.
This is useful for charging and organizing camera gear.
The best part of the room, is the balcony.
We take full advantage of the views
and spend hours, lounging on the balcony.
Breakfast
Breakfast at The Old Gin house comes with the stay and is substantial.
Our mornings start with a basket of breads, coffee, tea, and/or juice. Then there is a plate of yogurt, fruit, a slice of Gouda and meat.
Then there are eggs, cooked in any style, with sausage or bacon.
Truthfully, for us, it is too much food, so after the first day we opt for the plate of fruit and yogurt, or the eggs, but not both.
The outdoor patio is a lovely place to begin the day.
We even have special company.
Bar
The outdoor bar at The Old Gin House is bright and colorful.
We spend a few nights loafing on the sofas, sipping gin drinks (the bar does embrace the alternate meaning of the name). One night live music swirls around the deck.
The Old Gin House also has a neat indoor bar. The brick is fantastic.
It’s only open though when the outdoor bar is closed.
Pool
One of the prettiest pools we’ve lazed around.
The flowers make me happy.
Having a rest during trips is important, and something we aren’t always good at, so we specifically plan a morning around doing nothing but hanging out at The Old Gin House pool.
Conclusion
If you plan on visiting St. Eustatius, I highly recommend staying at The Old Gin House.
Do keep in mind that if you don’t rent a car, you will have to walk the steep path to get to the upper island.
The water views,
gorgeous, historic design, friendly staff, and food/bar, put The Old Gin House on the list of favorite accommodations so far.

atThe view from the balcony is breathtaking. I would like to live in a room with such a view. Then I relax best. You’re lucky you were there! 🙂

atBoth the Old Gin House on St. Eustatius island and the island itself are beautiful. I like the look of the brick walls that the hotel is built of. It looks aged from the outside but very cozy and modern inside. It must have been very enjoyable to watch sunsets from a spacious balcony as well as to go to the beach for a swim or a stroll. A tasty breakfast is a huge plus. I hope the roosters did not bother you too much. Thank you for sharing. I pinned your article for our future travels.
