Their eyes shine with fear, as they ask the question.

“How did you find us?”

“I went on the internet and Googled, small islands in the Bahamas. Elbow Cay popped up,” I explain.

Resident after resident looks us up and down, searching for the smallest whiff of party animal.

“We wanted to visit somewhere quiet, to relax.”

Panic calmed, their shoulders unclench. Their mouths turn up a friendly smile of acceptance.

When people think of The Bahamas, they usually think of islands like Nassau, Grand Bahama, or Great Exuma.

Few people know about the small island of Elbow Cay, and that is exactly how the residents and snow birds of Elbow Cay like it. If you are laid back, quiet, and looking for relaxation, you will be embraced.

If you are hoping to win the prize for most rum shots consumed in an hour, while using your creativity to fashion a bikini out of pool floats, I suspect the inhabitants of Elbow Cay will ship you off to Nassau.

We loved our hectic, crazy, 2018 travel year, but when the calendar ticked over to 2019, we were exhausted. Requiring a much-needed rest, we decided that our first trip in 2019 should be all about relaxation. A few clickity-clacks on my laptop’s keyboard lead me to Elbow Cay, Bahamas.

Getting To Elbow Cay

Our flight from Philadelphia, lands at the Marsh Harbour Airport, on Great Abaco Island.

Being a popular tourist destination, there are taxis aplenty waiting outside the airport’s doors.

We hop in a taxi and set off for Albury’s Ferry.

Prior to our trip, I read that the ferry to Elbow Cay fills up quickly, so we reserve a spot online, before leaving for the Bahamas.

Arriving early isn’t an issue. The ferry dock screams, it’s time to unwind. We take a seat and chill by the water until the ferry boarding begins.

The ferry ride is easy and pleasant.

There are two ferry docks on Elbow Cay. Most passengers get off at the Harbour Lodge dock, but if you’re visiting the island, you may want to double check with your accommodation just to be certain.

Our accommodation, The Hope Town Harbour Lodge, is steps away from the dock. Passengers staying on the south end of the island, ask the ferry workers to contact their accommodations to pick them up.

Getting Around Elbow Cay

One of the reasons we chose Elbow Cay, was its walkability.

On our first day, while sauntering back from dinner, a resident in a golf cart (the main mode of transportation on the island) slowed next to us.

“Hi, I’m driving into town to visit the post office. Do you want a lift?”

As someone who likes to stay sexy and not get murdered, I would usually decline a ride from a stranger, but I figure that it would be difficult to inconspicuously murder someone in a completely open golf cart.

We thank the woman, and jump into the back of the golf cart.

The Elbow Cay resident explains that this is the norm on the island.

If someone in a golf cart spots a walker, they will often stop to offer a ride.

During our brief stay, we accept rides from five different golf carts. Everyone is friendly and we have lovely chitchats. Of course, each time we are asked,

“How did you find us?”

Walking and hitching rides, works great for us during our stay, but guests on the island can also rent their own golf carts. Just be sure to reserve a cart well in advance. They rent out quickly.

Elbow Cay fulfills all of our lazy-days expectations.

We take long walks,

I’m ecstatic that we found Elbow Cay.

Elbow Cay looks just perfect if you really want to have a quiet, relaxed vacation! I’ve never been to the Bahamas but that is partly because it all seemed too much, but this doesn’t!
