The morning begins with safety briefings on our Alaska Uncruise. One briefing is for water safety, another for land safety. It’s the first of many “bear talks” we will receive. Our Adventure Guides do their best to make safety fun and entertaining.
After a hearty brunch (including the best bacon ever), we set out on the day’s activity.
Wanting to ease into the week, we pick the shore walk.
A light drizzle dispenses from the sky as our skiff makes its way to shore. The only sounds heard are the skiff’s motor, and the water that is disrupted by our motion.
As the moody clouds resting in the soaring trees get closer, my mind whispers, you’re in Alaska, you’re in Alaska, you’re in Alaska.
Uncruise’s Alaska packing list was very clear on what gear we needed.
As we step out of the skiff, into the water, I’m happy for my tall wellies (I’ve always wanted a pair of wellies), and my rain pants.
Jess, our Alaska Uncruise Adventure Guide, starts by telling us about the various water vegetation.
Tromping around in the water in my boots, is more fun than expected. It’s the adult adventure version of a kid jumping in puddles.
We learn to identify limpets (aquatic snails), by the shape of their shells.
Jess leads us into the forest, where we are educated about the trees and wildlife.
We walk among trees, and through a stream. The air smells of wild.
Peeking out from behind the plants and trees, is a pretty little waterfall.
To exit the forest, Jess takes us into a meadow. I am ecstatic. Grasses and wildflowers surround me. They swallow me up. It’s like being a character in one of the storybooks I read as a kid.
The water laps against the shore as we wait for the skiff to pick us up.
Once again I hear the whisper, you’re in Alaska, you’re in Alaska.
There is only time for one off-boat activity today. The ship must get moving so we can get to tomorrow’s destination, and we have a special guest to pick up along the way.
It’s only the first full day of our Alaska Uncruise, and it’s already been a great adventure. I cannot fathom the days that are to come.

atAlaska is so beautiful! Thank you for showing it’s serenity through your beautiful pictures, video, and words. It must have been really exciting to travel to the shore by a skiff and learn about nature from your travel guide.

atWhat great scenery. I had the “bear talk” when I was in Alaska but I don’t think I was very close to the issue (in towns and such).
