I sat on the edge of my seat, camera ready in my lap, arm poised to shoot up in the air.
From the first time I saw Animal Kingdom’s Flights of Wonder show, I wanted to be one of the owl volunteers. I dreamed of having an owl swoop at my head because-
- I love animals
- Owls are awesome.
- For a few seconds I could feel what it is like to be a character in Harry Potter (there’s a lot of owl swooping in Harry Potter)
I felt my chances dwindling as the cast member on stage picked volunteers from our section for other parts of the show. Surely they wouldn’t choose yet another person from the same section.
As soon as the cast member said that she needed two volunteers, my arm catapulted in the air. I was ecstatic when she pointed and called me out. I would have jumped up and down like The Price is Right if it had been appropriate. Instead, I stood up, properly excited, and made my way to the side of the stage.
I thought the other volunteer and I would get a little pep talk or something, but the male cast member only asked us our names. We were directed to a bench and told to have a seat. The male cast member scooched between us. He engaged in some friendly banter with the female cast member, who revealed exactly what was about to happen. The male cast member pretended to be afraid, got up, and ran off.
The owl flew into theater, settling at the back. The female cast member signaled, and suddenly the owl was flying straight at me.
It sounds strange, but it happened quickly, and in slow motion at the same time. The moment was brief, but the owl’s glide was so graceful, it felt like it was moving in slow motion. I wasn’t scared at all. I was in awe. The owl was so beautiful.
It was a fantastic experience. My husband took a shot that captured my pure joy. It will always be one of my favorite Disney memories.

atWhat a great experience for you! I loved watching the video and seeing that owl come straight over you. Thank you for that visual. I haven’t been to Animal Kingdom yet but this is definitely a show I’d love to see.
