Christmastime in the Magic Kingdom

“It’s so Christmas-y,”  I exclaim as I enter the Magic Kingdom.

The Christmas tree I am gazing up at is massive.

This is my first time at Disney World during the holidays and my excitement is palpable.

Being our third Disney World trip in three years, we decide to forgo our usual morning commando ride hopping in favor of a little chill out time.

We queue up at Starbucks with the caffeine deprived masses (I’ll later hear a Dad tell his kids that coffee is “Daddy’s wake-up juice”) mainly because I am the Obligatory Traveler and I felt I had to get the obligatory Starbucks cup in front of the castle shot.

We settle at a table near the ice cream parlor and watch everyone else take their castle coffee cup photos. As we people watch I play a game where I identify the groups that are going to have an awesome time and survive the day, and the groups that will most likely have five meltdowns before noon.

The Main Street trolley, carrying Dickens-esque dressed cast members stops nearby. I jump to my feet as the music begins and rush over to watch the show.

The performers sing and dance to a holiday songs and it makes the morning all the more cheery. I fantasize about being one of the girls in the trolley show. I would love to dance around in one of those super twirly skirts.

So twirly….

We sip our coffee for a little longer, and then get up to walk around. I spot the trolley again, but this time the passengers appear to be The Dapper Dans. In all of our trips to both Disney World and Disneyland we ended up just missing The Dapper Dans’ performance.

“Follow that trolley,” I command.

We follow it and watch as it comes to a stop near the train station. A few guests climb aboard. We stand and stare for a few moments, then the trolley driver asks us,

“Do you want a ride?”

“Sure,” we answer.

We slide onto an available bench.

The horse begins clipping and clopping down Main Street. I relish the unique view.

Standing at the back of the trolley are The Dapper Dans. They sing holiday songs in their barbershop quartet style and tell jokes.

People stop to watch. Some wave at us and I wave back. I feel like a special VIP even though anyone who wants to can ride the trolley down Main Street.

We come to a stop near the castle.

The ride is over. It’s a short ride, but we finally got to hear The Dapper Dans and while riding the trolley no less. It will remain one of my favorite Disney Park experiences.

Main Street is the most Christmas-y area of the Magic Kingdom. From the shop windows,

to inside the stores,

to the buildings, everything has extra holiday flair. You definitely want to spend time soaking it all in.

There are a few touches here and there throughout the rest of the park. One of my favorites was the confirmation that yes, Gaston does in fact use antlers in all of his decorating.

Of course you can’t visit the Magic Kingdom at Christmastime without taking a ride on the Jingle Cruise. Make certain to get a fast pass for this one, as the wait time is high during holiday time.

I think it might be even more fun than the regular Jungle Cruise. It’s pun-tastic (oh how I love puns), and the decorations are pretty great.

Then there is the piece de resistance, the oh so sparkly castle at night. It is a stunning sight. You just can’t take your eyes off of it, and if you’re like me, you also can’t help taking about a hundred pictures.

Even though all of the parks are decorated for the holidays, there is something extra magical about being in the Magic Kingdom. I think everyone should experience it at least once, and if you have time, take a ride on the trolley.
