2016 granted us many great travel memories. Our travels this year inspired us, taught us, and literally saved my life. Here are a few of the highlights in no particular order.
1) Staying at Oasi
By far our favorite accommodation of the year.
This small set of apartments on Caye Caulker, Belize, was a quiet, relaxed paradise.
The vibrant, artist/ owner, Luciana, her mother, Mama, and Fifi the cat, made the stay all the more memorable.
We also met Evelyn and her husband Brian, a fellow travel writer, who has a great blog on all things Belize.
We made daily use of the swimming pool, the dock,
and had a lovely time at the book fair and art exhibition.
It’s a great place to stay if you are visiting Caye Caulker.
2)Mount Evans, Colorado
My favorite part of our trip to Colorado.
The drive and the summit offered numerous inspiring views and beauty.
3)Ziplining
It sat on “the list” for years, and finally in 2016 we got to go ziplining for the very first time during our trip to Belize.
I was a little nervous at first, but ziplining is tons of fun.
I hope we get to do it again during future travels.
4)Traveling with Friends
This year we spent a week at Disney World with friends.
Since it’s usually just the two of us, it was a nice change getting to spend quality time with people we care about, especially two extremely easy to hang out with, continually impressive teenagers (it gives me hope for the future).
It was so much fun being able to bond and share experiences together. We all had a great time.
5) Cave Tubing
Cave Tubing in Belize was definitely the coolest experience of the year.
I wasn’t sure what to expect after reading other travelers complaints about how touristy cave tubing in Belize is, but we were fortunate to be there on a non-cruise ship day and had a spectacular time.
Not only was it the coolest thing we did this year, it was probably one of the coolest things we’ve done in our travels so far.
6)Participating in the Owl Swoop
Okay, this one is just me. There is a show at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom called Flights of Wonder. During the show they ask for two volunteers to come up on stage. Once the volunteers are in place, they bring out a huge owl that swoops down at the volunteers.
I raised my hand last year, but didn’t get picked, but this year I got to go on the stage for the owl swoop.
Since I already knew what was going to happen I was less scared and more ecstatic with glee. It was one of the highlights of my year.
7) Breakfast at Denver Biscuit Company
Being fans of eating, we had lots of great meals this year, but the one that stood out the most was our breakfast at Denver Biscuit Company in Denver, Colorado.
The hip atmosphere, self-serve coffee, and enormous, over the top, delicious sandwiches, made it a meal to be remembered.
8) Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
There’s something magical about Christmas, and there’s no place better to feel the magic of the season than Disney’s Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
The fireworks,
the parade,
and my favorite kind of snow, fake,
resulted in a jolly evening. I even got to meet Jack Skellington.
9) Flash Flood at Red Rocks
So perhaps finding ourselves in the midst of a flash flood was not our favorite experience (I prefer to stay dry), but it was one of the most memorable and interesting things that happened during our travels this year.
Plus, we still got to knock seeing a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater off of the list while seeing one of our favorite bands, Steely Dan.
10) Playing Hide and Seek in San Pedro, Belize
Being asked by two adorable kids to play on the beach while we waited for our ferry wins the prize for the most fun, unexpected experience of the year.
I will never forget Gabby and her little brother.
Who knew missing our ferry and having to wait would result in one of our greatest memories of the year.
That sums up our favorite travel experiences of 2016. I know plenty of people had a terrible 2016, but it was pretty good to us. To be honest, after all of the health drama this summer, from this point forward I’m just happy to be alive for another year, and to be healthy enough to be able to enjoy the activities I love. Now to see what new and amazing experiences 2017 has waiting for us.

atIt looks like you had some fantastic experiences. I also went ziplining this year and loved it too. Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party looks like a lot of fun! It must have been amazing being in Disneyland around Christmas.
